Jeff Gallo and the Monmouth Blueprint: Building the Nation’s #1 Offense

Coach -
At a time when offensive innovation dominates college football headlines, few programs have executed with the consistency and precision of Monmouth University under offensive coordinator Jeff Gallo. Gallo’s offense currently leads all of Division I — FCS and FBS — averaging 575.6 yards per game, a staggering mark that has drawn national attention.
For Gallo, though, the production isn’t just about schemes or play calls — it’s about people, culture, and clarity of purpose.
“We set goals and build a culture around who we want to be. Everything ties back to our identity on offense.”
Rooted in Monmouth
Gallo’s story is inseparable from Monmouth’s. A 2005 graduate, he’s been part of the program for two decades — first as a player, then as a coach. Working alongside head coach Kevin Callahan, who started the program in 1993 and remains its only head coach, Gallo has seen Monmouth evolve from a regional FCS name into a nationally recognized offensive force.
“Coach Callahan is Monmouth football,” Gallo said. “He’s built this from the ground up and given us a foundation where we can thrive offensively.”
That stability has allowed Gallo to build continuity within his staff — something he considers one of the greatest competitive advantages in today’s coaching climate. Offensive line coach Brian Gabriel has been with him for 20 years, while running backs coach Sam Dorset has spent 12 seasons mentoring three national rushing leaders in the past five years. Quarterbacks coach Jimmy Robertson, a former head coach at FDU, and wide receivers coach Kevin Callahan Jr., round out one of the most cohesive offensive staffs in college football.
Offensive Identity and Production
Monmouth’s offense has become a model of balance and explosiveness. In 2024, the Hawks not only led the CAA but also topped the nation in total offense while ranking second in scoring offense. Over the last three seasons since joining the CAA, Monmouth has finished no lower than second in the league in both categories — and consistently among the national top 15.
Their success isn’t limited to the team level. Monmouth has produced the CAA Offensive Player of the Year in each of the last three seasons:
- 2022–23: RB Jaden Shirden – Nation’s leading rusher
- 2023: WR Dymere Miller – Nation’s leading receiver
- 2024: QB Derek Robertson – Nation’s leading passer
Each award reflects a program that adapts its approach to its personnel rather than forcing a rigid system.
“We build the offense around what our players do best,” Gallo explained. “Our job is to maximize their strengths — that’s our system.”
The Formula Behind 575.6 Yards Per Game
At the heart of Gallo’s philosophy is a clear understanding of offensive identity — the “what” and “who” of Monmouth football. He describes it as a constant process of setting measurable goals, refining practice structure, and empowering assistant coaches to own their areas.
That ownership translates to accountability in execution. Whether it’s tempo, formation versatility, or the balance between the run and pass, Monmouth’s offense is designed to create stress without sacrificing simplicity.
Their statistical dominance is a byproduct of that mindset — leading the nation not only in yardage, but also ranking among the top units in fourth-down conversions and fewest tackles for loss allowed. The offense’s adaptability makes it one of the most efficient in modern college football.
Coaching Takeaway: Share the H.A.W.K.
Jeff Gallo’s Monmouth offense isn’t built on gimmicks or gadgets — it’s built on principles. He and his staff live by what they call the H.A.W.K. mindset — a framework that defines how they coach, practice, and compete. It’s a model any coach can apply to sharpen their program’s identity.
H – Have a Clear Identity
Know exactly who you are and what you want to be on offense. Gallo’s unit builds every goal, install, and meeting around its offensive DNA — not trends or hype.
A – Align Staff and Players
Continuity isn’t luck. Monmouth’s staff alignment and shared language have created consistency across years and personnel. Every assistant owns their segment of the game plan and contributes to a unified whole.
W – Work the Details Daily
From practice scripts to situational calls, Gallo’s offense wins through precision. Execution comes from daily detail — not just big-picture philosophy.
K – Keep It Player-Driven
The offense adapts to its talent, not the other way around. Whether it’s the nation’s leading passer, rusher, or receiver, Monmouth builds around its players’ strengths and puts them in positions to succeed.
“We’re not chasing trends — we’re chasing efficiency,” Gallo says. “Our players know exactly what we expect and why it matters.”
Conclusion
As Monmouth continues to put up video-game numbers against FCS — and even FBS-caliber — competition, Jeff Gallo’s offense is a study in sustained excellence. It’s proof that clarity, continuity, and commitment to player-driven design can turn a good system into the nation’s best.
Monmouth doesn’t just move the chains — it sets the standard.
