Coaching Insight from Wild Card Weekend - Sunday Funday

Coach -

Saturday’s games got away from the Browns and the Dolphins, so hopefully we have some exciting games as Wild Card weekend continues.

Today we have three of the four teams represented in our various clinics, so let’s take a look at coaching points from those presentations.

LA Rams

Show them it Matters

Jake Peetz, QB Coach for the LA Rams, show how drills that have the coach clapping to signal a throw are applicable when you show how those things matter in game by demonstrating on game film. He makes the point in this video that the clap in a drill is much like an indicator step on a route that signals the QB to throw. He shows Derek Carr executing the technique.

Green Bay Packers

Green Bay offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich will be looking to establish the run against a a solid Cowboys defense. If Stenavich can’t get running back duo Aaron Jones and AJ Dillion going, it could be a long day for Green Bay.

Look for Coach Stenavich to rely on outside zone plays and the performance of his offensive line to improve their run game and try to control the clock this Sunday. It’s part of his overall philoshophy (click image for video):

Coach Stenavich’s outside zone run philosophies include the “Trail Man” and the rules they must follow. Check out this clip of him explaining these rules and look for them to show up on film during their matchup on Sunday night.

RPO Double Glance

Since Time Lester is an analyst on the defensive side of the ball, this coaching point probably has no bearing on today’s game, but none-the-less definitely has some value for all of the offensive coaches reading. Former Head Coach at Western Michigan Tim Lester made the RPO a big part of the the WMU attack. He liked to attack level 3 while giving the QB options.

An offense, especially the QB, is not always able to know which safety will trigger. In order to give the QB opportunities on a 3rd level RPO,he utilizes double glance which gives the QB the ability to attack either side of the defense based on which safety fits. He explains the concept here (click on image for video):

Dallas Cowboys

Coach Dan Quinn is being mentioned again for vacant Head Coach jobs. He continues to put a top performing defense on the field as the defensive coordinator for the Cowboys.

Coach Quinn embraces the idea that everything we accomplish, we accomplish as a team. Coach Quinn talks about the players in this example he shares, but this applies to the coordinator and everyone on the staff (click on image for video):
