Clemson's 5 Daily Musts for Dominant DL Play

Coach -

In the trenches, success isn’t about hype. It’s about habits. For Clemson defensive line coach John Scott Jr., development comes down to five non-negotiables—repped every single day, no matter the situation, no matter the pads.

“These five things are going to get worked, period.”

Scott doesn’t rely on luck or raw talent. His unit is built on discipline—through footwork, hips, hands, block destruction, and key drills.

1. Footwork First

“You could have the best stance in the world, but if you have bad footwork, you’re probably going to have a bad play.” Scott’s foundational principle is movement efficiency. It’s the first thing repped, and it sets the tone for everything else. That means tight footwork through bags, chest over knees, toes driving into the ground, and violent bursts through contact.

He especially emphasizes slant footwork. While some teach lateral steps, Scott wants vertical penetration. “We’re a 45-degree step. I’m aiming with that step, gaining ground, second step in the ground fast.” He teaches it with intent: toe-to-instep staggered stance to maximize drive and penetration.

2. Explosive Hips

The second must: hips. Violent, sudden, explosive. It’s the engine behind knockback. Every day, players train how to uncoil with force—whether it’s a strike or a finish. Without hips, there’s no power.

3. Great Hands

Scott doesn’t settle for generic hand fighting. He demands precision—targeted strikes, rapid separation, and a consistent ability to control blocks. Players are trained to win hand placement at first contact, then finish with violence.

4. Block Destruction

This isn’t just about stacking and shedding—it’s about knowing how to respond to what you see. “We have to be great at getting off blocks. Period.” Whether it’s power, zone, or gap schemes, Scott wants his linemen to know what’s coming and respond with urgency and dominance.

5. Key Drill (Eyes & Response)

Key Drill ties it all together. “It’s block recognition. It’s understanding what’s going to happen to me as I look at my man.” In this drill, players read their key post-snap and immediately react with technique and violence. No guesswork. No hesitation.

The emphasis is on diagnosing and responding within a second.

Final Takeaway

John Scott Jr. doesn’t complicate development—he clarifies it. These five fundamentals are his baseline, and they don’t change. Whether it’s a walkthrough or full-padded practice, the standard holds.

Because in his room, good habits aren’t optional—they’re the price of playing.

Thank you to Coach Scott for sharing his presentation!
