Choosing the Right Quarterback for Your Youth Football Team

Coach -
I hope this email finds you well and energized for the season ahead. As we prepare our teams, one of the most critical decisions we face is selecting our quarterback—a decision that can shape the dynamics of our entire offense.
It’s easy to get caught up in the idea that a quarterback needs a cannon arm or fits a certain physical mold, but through years of experience as a quarterback coach, it’s clear that the qualities of a great quarterback go far beyond that.
Here are some key traits to consider when choosing your quarterback. Thank you to Coach Matt Lasker for these ideas. A link to his video on this is below:
- Natural Leadership: Look for a player who naturally steps up and leads, someone his peers want to follow. This is the player who rallies others, both on and off the field, and who can keep the team motivated and focused.
- Football IQ: While some kids excel in math or comprehension, others have a natural understanding of the game. They can see the field, anticipate plays, and make smart decisions under pressure.
- Consistency: A consistent personality is invaluable. Avoid players who get frustrated easily or blame others. Instead, choose someone who remains calm, even when things aren’t going perfectly.
- Grit: This has become a buzzword for a reason. The best quarterbacks are resilient—they make mistakes, learn from them, and bounce back quickly, always ready for the next play.
- Multi-Sport Athletes: Encourage your players to participate in multiple sports. Kids who excel as point guards, pitchers, or shortstops often have the vision, decision-making skills, and pressure-handling ability that translate well to the quarterback position.

As Coach Lasker mentions, don’t forget, sometimes the best quarterbacks aren’t the ones who look the part. They might come from unexpected places—like a steady lineman who understands the game better than anyone else on the field.
I learned this lesson early as a 19-year old coach. Our quarterback was at guard when we took over the program. He was a big-physical kid, and looked like a youth offensive lineman. He went on to be a 3x state champion quarterback, all-state, and High School All-American, starting at Boston College, and having a cup of coffee with the New England Patriots.
It’s a lesson that we shouldn’t pigeon-hole kids early in their playing careers.
So as you evaluate your players, focus on these key attributes. Remember, it’s not about what they look like, but their ability to process and execute under pressure that will make them successful quarterbacks.
Wishing you all a successful season ahead!
