Coach ,
The football community lost a great one today with the passing of Coach Alex Gibbs.
Alex Gibbs (February 22, 1941 – July 12, 2021) was an NFL offensive line coach and former assistant head coach who forever changed the way we coach offense with his zone-blocking scheme.
Coach Gibbs won the North Carolina 3A High School State Championship at Mount Airy High School in 1968. He was a two-time Super Bowl Champion as an assistant with the Denver Broncos (XXXII & XXXIII).
Coach Gibbs was known as a guru of zone blocking and used it while he was offensive line coach of the Denver Broncos. The Broncos became famous for their use of undersized and more agile offensive linemen.
Coach Gibbs continued to teach the wide zone play and the boot off of it which is seen in the Mike Shanahan coaching tree in the NFL today. The Alex Gibbs methodology can be seen across all levels of football.
As a tribute to Coach Gibbs, the COOL Clinic would like you to have this free clinic from the 2015 COOL Clinic, the last one which Coach Gibbs spoke at, “The Outside Zone, Tight Zone, Boot Play and Thoughts on Power.”
In this clinic, the Godfather of the Zone Running Game shares his insight on the running play that has dominated the game at every level and continues to be a force in the modern offense.
Coach Gibbs legacy will live on in the hearts of those he coached and on football fields across America as the zone running game continues to thrive.
Thank you Coach Gibbs for your contributions to our game!
