For Alma College Defensive Coordinator Ryan Ettinger, preparing for game day is about more than just a list of plays. It’s about building a plan with a clear, adaptable philosophy—a process that’s helped his defenses play more efficiently and confidently.

It Starts with a Philosophy

Ettinger admits that earlier in his career, even when he felt good about the calls and matchups, something was missing. “I still didn’t think we had a real good philosophy,” he explains. “When are we going to be aggressive? When are we going to be conservative?”

That missing piece led him to develop a system where the game plan isn't just about schemes—it's about the mindset behind them. Each week, Ettinger and his staff decide:

  • Will we bring pressure early?

  • Do we need to sit back and read?

  • Are there key personnel matchups that dictate our approach?

By locking in that situational philosophy ahead of time, the staff can adjust in real time, ensuring they’re not reacting emotionally but following a thought-out plan. Ettinger memorizes his call sheet—not just the plays, but the intended tempo, pressure packages, and personnel adjustments—so he can respond instantly without hesitation.

The Game Plan Checklist

Ettinger’s weekly preparation is driven by a game plan checklist that digs into the identity of the offense:

  • Who do they want to get the ball to?

  • Are they a scheme-heavy team or do they rely on multiple formations?

  • What’s their tempo, motion tendencies, and adjustment patterns?

“If they’re a big motion team, what are our checks? If they’re a tempo team, what’s our tempo answer?” Ettinger asks. His checklist helps the defense prepare for both what an offense typically does and how they might pivot if they fall behind or take a lead.

He challenges his players to study these tendencies as well. Ettinger expects his defense to know player names, alignments, and body language tells. “Some offensive linemen have a lot of subtle tendencies,” he says. It’s about building an edge—not just through scheme but through relentless detail.

Quarterback-Driven Game Planning

One of the most critical areas of focus? The quarterback.

Ettinger takes a deep analytical dive into the QB’s strengths and weaknesses.

  • Does he crumble under pressure?

  • Can he handle rotations?

  • Does press coverage throw off his timing?

That intel informs the entire defensive strategy, from pressure packages to coverage disguises. “We need to know—does he leave the pocket when he feels pressure, or does he sit in it?”

The Value of Purposeful Preparation

At the heart of Ettinger’s system is this: Purpose drives everything. It’s not enough to have answers on a call sheet. You need a deliberate plan, a shared philosophy, and players who are fully prepared.

The combination of detailed scouting, situational philosophy, and in-game adaptability has helped Alma’s defense play faster and smarter. As Ettinger puts it, “Just going through those scenarios and having that philosophy going in has been really good for us in being productive and efficient.”
