#10 – Miami Hurricanes: The Gallop That Moves Defenders

The Hurricanes have the size, speed, and physicality to be a force in 2025—but their real edge may come from the details. In the trenches, small technical advantages turn into big plays, and Miami’s offensive line coach Alex Mirabal is one of the best at creating those edges.
One example from his Wide Zone Fundamentals with Use of Gallop Technique clinic is how he teaches the Gallop against a shaded defender—like a 2i or 3-tech. The goal? Generate vertical movement before climbing to the second level.

His coaching points are simple but powerful:
- First step gains ground vertically—no “tucking” under yourself
- Stay square so you can redirect if the defender slants
- Work hip-to-hip with your partner on the double until the first level is secure
- Finish through the climb—don’t peel off early
In the clinic, Mirabal even breaks down why a running back’s read depends on this exact technique—showing how precise footwork by the OL can open backside cut lanes in zone schemes.
Miami 2025 Outlook:
- Strengths: High-upside QB play with Carson Beck, elite OL anchored by Francis Mauigoa, disruptive edge threat in Rueben Bain, top-tier CB duo in OJ Frederique & Xavier Lucas
- Weaknesses: Penalty issues (120th in penalty yards), unproven safety group, replacing leadership of LB Francisco Mauigoa, loss of top six pass catchers
- X-Factor: Discipline in high-leverage games—especially the Week 0 showdown with Notre Dame
We are getting closer to a week 0 kick-off. Enjoy the weekend and learn!
