Learning from Champions - Switch Four-Verts for the Win

Dec 14, 2021 2:08 am

Coach ,

We continue on with our Learning from Champions series as we head to Arizona to recognize their state champions.

Head Coach Jason Mohns and the Saguaro Sabercats won their 7th state championship, but just the first in Arizona’s open division as they knocked off Chandler which had won five-in-a-row dating back to 2015. On the way to the state championship game the Sabercats stunned No. 11 nationally-ranked Hamilton in the semifinals.

Coach Mohns is highly regarded in his ability to build a championship program as well as his offensive expertise.  He was the lone high school coach that Tony Franklin featured at his “OC Magic” event in 2018.

I was at Franklin’s OC Magic and then Texas (now Central Florida) offensive line coach Herb Hand, speaking after Mohns, heaped praise on Mohns, who was sitting in the front row.

“I’m so fired up for you, dude. One day I hope I work for you. You’ve got it figured out, dude. If you’re going to overhaul your whole system, go do what he does. No wonder he scores 50 points a game.”

Franklin praised Mohns as well predicting that Mohns would be a guy coaching at the major college level soon.

That’s probably something that Saguaro does not want to see.

In the state championship game, Mohns waited to call a switch vertical concept with just over four minutes to go and trailing 15-14. It worked to perfection and they took the lead on their way to the title.

Here is Coach Mohns teaching his switch 4-vertical concept which they call “Vegas Swag.” He shares the details of the play including how they train the catch in pre-practice pat-and-go. (click on image for video)
