The £220k ego trip. Episode 3. The power of taking a pause.

Episode 3. The power of taking a pause.

A year after his tech disaster, Marcus faced another massive turning point. ApexRoute was bidding for its largest contract in company history.

The prospective client loved the platform but had a catch: they demanded a highly customized software feature delivered within thirty days. It was an incredibly tight deadline that would strain the engineering team to their breaking point.

The "Old Marcus" would have accepted the deal instantly, ignored the risks, and forced his team to crunch.

Instead, Marcus paused. He remembered a recent peer group session on “The strategic No" and the dangers of over-promising. He went to his tech lead and asked: "Can we deliver this safely without burning out?" The lead admitted it was a massive operational risk.

Armed with peer feedback and objective data, Marcus went back to the client. He negotiated a forty-five-day timeline, trading a minor delay for guaranteed system stability.

The client didn't walk away. In fact, they respected his honesty and signed the contract a few days later.

Marcus returned to his office not as an exhausted hero carrying the entire business, but as a balanced leader who trusted his team. The peer group hadn't just saved his decision-making - it had saved his company.

The takeaway for CEOs: Are you ready to drop the armour?

If you're tired of making high-stakes decisions in isolation, it’s time to change how you do things.

Our peer group is currently selecting ambitious CEOs to share the journey. Drop me a note if you think you might be the right kind of person to join us.
