The Leadership Mistake That's Costing You Energy
Howdy ,
Here's the mistake I see most team leaders make:
They try to strengthen their weakness instead of maximizing their strength.
A Bridge Builder tries to become better at big-picture vision. An Ideator forces themselves to be more relationship-focused. A Rock Star attempts to become detail-oriented.
This is exhausting and ineffective.
Here's what high-performing leaders do instead:
They identify their primary strength and double down on it. Then they identify their secondary strength that amplifies the first one.
A Rock Star might have Bridge Builder as their secondary – so they inspire with vision AND build deep connections.
An Ideator might have Innovator tendencies – so they teach concepts AND bring fresh perspectives.
But here's the key: they don't try to be good at everything. They become exceptional at their natural combination.
Then – and this is crucial – they build a team that covers what they don't do naturally.
A Bridge Builder partners with someone who's great at systems implementation. A Rock Star works with someone who excels at detailed execution.
Stop trying to fix your weaknesses. Start maximizing your strengths and building a team that complements you.
Yes, and it’s not impossible that some people will not like being under your style of leadership. It’s OK if they move to another team. You can’t be everything to everyone.
Be the best to the people who resonate with your leadership style.
Keep winning at work and in life.
