A few weeks back, someone reached out to me for a quick consult.
The guy was having a bit of a challenge with his boss.
According to him, he was good at delivering his results.
But his boss did not just "feel" him.
This was affecting a few of the tasks he was working on.

This guy was delivering on functional value and ignoring the emotional value component of his job.
His boss needs to feel at ease when he is on a task. It is the only way his work and results will get the recognition they deserve from his boss.
It's not his boss's job to "feel" a certain way about his ability to perform or his results. It is his job to "engineer" the feeling his boss should have.
Naa...this is not manipulation or politicking.
It’s service.
Your job (especially as a high performer) is not just to “do the work”.
Your job is to reduce anxiety for the people who depend on your work.
For his boss, emotional value looked like:
- Proactive updates (so he’s not guessing where things are)
- Flagging risks early (so he’s not blindsided in meetings)
- Making it clear “I’ve got this” without waiting to be chased
Same deliverables.
Different experience.
Different perception.
