The Thing That Captains of Industry Can't Resist
Howdy ,
Quick question: How long do you have to capture someone's attention in today's workplace?
8 seconds or less.
That's it. 8 seconds before they decide whether your message is worth their time.
At a recent Shareholder, Board & Management Strategy Alignment where I facilitated a presentation, I used my 8 seconds to pre-frame my audience.
I started with, ”This presentation is meant to stimulate ideas, thoughts, and reflections which will guide our discussion time.”
Leading with that headline got the room of captains of industry fully invested in what I was going to say next.
Then I explain how.
The rule is simple: Lead with the outcome, not the journey.
Most of us are trained to build up to our point – set context, provide background, then deliver the conclusion. But busy professionals need the opposite.
They need to know immediately:
- What are you asking for?
- Why should they care?
- What happens next?
This applies to emails, presentations, and even casual conversations with your boss.
Start with your conclusion. Then provide the supporting details.
Your ideas are too valuable to be buried under unnecessary setup.
