Why I Told Him to Stay Under a Toxic Boss.

Why on earth would I tell someone to STAY and continue working under a toxic boss when everyone else in the team was jumping ship?

And everyone else was advising “Don’t stay where you are not celebrated.”

(Everyone that is...except Yours Truly)

For the simple fact that he’ll achieve his career goals better by staying!

Here’s the deal...

This guy was a high performer who had just made a career transition and pivoted into a new career.

Where he was coming from, he was:

•    Overseeing multiple teams

•    Second in line to the head honcho of the departmental group

•    On track for getting a promotion soon.

With this history, everything was telling him that he needed to leave and probably find somewhere like the place he left.

But because of what his career vision was and what mattered most to him, there was something for him in staying under the toxic boss. The toxic boss was so good that working here could be a ticket to bigger things if he could learn from the working experience.

Yes, the decision was made to stay. But we also did three things more:

  1. Developed a clear plan to ensure he continued to build his confidence
  2. Designed a road map to ensure that he delivered results that kept the toxic boss at bay
  3. Built a support network to sustain him.

You want to know the outcome of all this?

I bet you would.

The client in question is yours truly “Moi”. Yes, I was my first guinea pig to test that what I teach actually works. I self-coached myself - literally.

So, what has come out of that whole path? Well, I have, amongst other things:

  • Gone on to deliver multi-million dollar projects.
  • Worked with 8 national, state & regional governments across Africa. (The first one was while working for the aforementioned boss)
  • Lived and worked in 3 different languages & cultures (English, French & Spanish)

Not saying this in a braggadocios way, I bet you already know that.

There are strategies for winning at work with Toxic & Difficult bosses.

Let me be your Yoda and give you the insights and strategies to navigate complex workplace dynamics with different challenging boss types.
