This week, be curious.

About what?

About people.

Let me explain this better.

People will be the most difficult aspect of your work. And they will also make your work easier if you let them.

They can frustrate you, and they can motivate you if you let them.

Let me share something that happened recently to me.

I sent an email to a colleague of mine not too long ago. I was out of the office for a few days but since I wanted this treated urgently, I called her a couple of times.

She didn’t pick up. And neither did she do that the other times I called her later in the week.

And she didn’t act on the email as quickly as I wanted it.

I have significant seniority so I could do the things bosses do.

I decided to do something else.

I decided to be curious.

After a meeting to discuss another issue with her, I asked, “I’d like to know if phone calls are not one of the ways to get results faster from you. I called you a couple of times and I was miffed that my calls were not returned.”

Her response?

I’ll keep the top-line version and go into the underlined version.

According to her, she experiences anxiety picking up calls.

Be curious about people.

You might discover that what you thought was done in spite was done in error.

Be curious.
