Don't Wait for Your Company to Train You
Howdy ,
Do you have a Personal Learning Plan?
In case I threw the curve-ball at you and you have no idea what this is, today is your lucky day.
I’ll give you the clip note version of it.
A personal learning plan is the curriculum you set up for yourself focused on key areas you want to grow in.
I have one.
In my curriculum, I focus on 4 things - spiritual development, personal development, people leadership & communication.
For years, every week, I would learn about all these 4 areas - courses, podcasts & books.
Not because I had an exam to write, but because I wanted to get better.
As it would turn out, a lot of those learning skills became relevant at the new job I took up last year.
Here's the thing most people miss:
They wait for their company to train them. They wait for the "perfect" course to come along. They wait for someone else to invest in their growth.
But here's what I've learned after working with career professionals across 3 continents: The professionals who accelerate fastest are the ones who take ownership of their own development.
Why This Matters More Than Ever
In today's workplace, change happens fast. Skills that were valuable five years ago might be irrelevant today. The only way to stay ahead is to be constantly learning.
But here's the secret sauce: Don't just learn randomly. Be strategic about it.
How to Build Your Own Personal Learning Plan
1. Identify your growth areas: What skills do you need for where you want to go (not just where you are)?
2. Create your weekly rhythm: I dedicate specific days to specific learning areas. Monday might be leadership, Wednesday communication, etc.
3. Mix your learning methods: Books, podcasts, courses, conversations with mentors - variety keeps it engaging.
4. Apply immediately: Don't just consume content. Find ways to practice what you learn at work.
The real magic happens when you stick with it consistently. Those small daily investments compound over time.
Your Next Step
Pick one area you want to grow in over the next 90 days. Then commit to spending 15 minutes a day learning about it.
That's it. Simple, but powerful.
Remember, your career is your business. And every successful business invests in R&D.
What area will you focus on first?
