The Promise You Made Out Loud

Follow-Through is what you do. Word is what you said. They are not the same test, and most people never separate the two.

Go back to your list from yesterday. Now ask yourself a sharper question: which of those promises did you make casually, almost as filler…"I'll circle back," "let's touch base," "I'll loop you in"…without really meaning it as a commitment?

That is where most people leak trust the fastest.

Not through big promises they broke. Through small ones they never intended anyone to hold them to. The problem is, the other person does not know it was filler. They filed it as your word.

My old colleague never remembered anything I said casually. He remembered what I did when what I said got tested. That only happens if what you say and what you are willing to do are the same sentence.

So today, before you say any version of "I'll get back to you," pause and ask yourself: am I willing to be held to this exactly as I have said it? If the answer is no, say something truer instead. "I cannot commit to that yet" costs you nothing.

A casual promise you do not keep costs you everything, slowly, one small disappointment at a time.

Tighten your Word, and your Follow-Through takes care of itself.
