Access is rarely given to talent alone

Howdy ,

Talent does not automatically create Access.

Trust does.

At senior levels, consequential opportunities are rarely distributed only by competence.

Who gets invited into the room?

Who gets the sensitive information?

Who gets introduced to the important relationship?

Who is allowed to represent the organisation?

Who gets a larger mandate before they have done that exact job before?

Usually, somebody is making a risk decision.

And trust lowers perceived risk.

That is why I think of Access as one of the outcomes of trusted leadership.

But there is a second level.

A serious executive does not merely accumulate access personally.

They use their credibility to create access for others.

Better rooms. Better information. Better relationships. Bigger responsibilities. Greater exposure.

People should become more capable…and more trusted…because they have worked with you.

So ask yourself:

Whose opportunity surface has become larger because I lead them?

I think this is an underused test of senior leadership.

You may see it differently.

If you believe an executive can be genuinely successful while all consequential Access still terminates with them, I'd like to hear the argument.

Keep winning at work and in life
