Beyond the work itself (what they really want)
Howdy ,
Yesterday I shared how goal alignment transforms average teams into powerhouses.
Today, let me give you the exact conversation starter that reveals what your people really want.
The Question That Changes Everything:
"Beyond the work itself, what would make this role absolutely perfect for you in the next 12 months?"
Notice what this question does:
- Gets past job descriptions to real motivations
- Creates safety (it's about making their role better, not evaluating performance)
- Focuses on the near future (feels achievable, not abstract)
When I asked a staff member in a previous team I led, a variation of this question, I discovered:
James (not his real name) wanted opportunities to run bigger projects (Professional Goal). He also wanted flexibility to pursue his side business (Personal Goal).
Each revelation became a bridge to connect his aspirations with our business needs.
You see, his side business was not “far” from his day job. The more he built his competence in that area, the bigger the value he brought to his job.
The Pattern I've Noticed:
Leaders who ask this question regularly build teams that outperform.
Leaders who assume they know what people want? Their teams plateau.
Try this question (or a variation of it) with one or two team members this week.
You'll be surprised by what you discover.
Keep winning at work and in life.
