Why "Free" Opportunities Could Be Costing You Your Future

Howdy ,

Fellow Workplace Multipliers,

Today. I’d like to start with a question.

How do you make the everyday decisions about your career?

I start with this question for a reason.

You’ll get it better when I share this story.

It’s not a fictional one.

A few years back, I was on a clarity call with a client. During our conversation, we had mapped out what he wanted next for his career.

More than that, we had also identified the skills he needed to get to the next level. The next stage was getting the plan to work.

It was then he came up with one of those “distracting ideas”.

He had gotten a scholarship for training which had no relationship to where he was going professionally.

The training had some time commitment which would stretch over a couple of months. He couldn’t combine it with anything else because he had a day job.

So, I asked him, “Do you need this training for anything?” His response was no.

But he wanted to still go for it.

Why?

Because he was not paying for it.

He was paying for it.

He just didn’t know.

He was paying for it with his time.

Yep, money can be replaced. Not time.

This is one of the reasons why I focus my practice on results for my clients - not sharing knowledge.

Knowledge is free now - YouTube, ChatGPT, Claude, DeepSeek, are all guaranteed to give you knowledge.

I focus on getting the results using a shorter time.

Why?

Because you can’t replace time.

I work to give my clients 3 things.

1 - The clarity of the actions they need to take.

2 - The certainty of the results they will get.

3 - The collapsing of the time to get the results by taking the actions we agree on.

Back to the guy.

He was committed to not acting in his best interest because he thought the free training was worth his time.

I did not try to change his choice. I can’t do that.

But I’d like to remind you of a few things.

The most expensive thing in your life isn't what you buy. It's what you waste your time on.

Most people make career decisions based on what's convenient today rather than what serves their future. That's why most people stay stuck.

If it doesn't align with where you're going, it's a detour, not an opportunity.

This is why every day I show up in your email, I am committed to giving you something that aligns with where you would like to go at work and in life.

Yes, YOU can always be sure of that.

Before I go today, I’d like to remind you to sign up for the “Winning at Work With Toxic & Difficult Bosses” Workshop coming up on Saturday, March 8, 2025. https://bit.ly/WinToxicBossDoc
