You don't get it? When bosses speak alien

Yesterday, I watched an interesting conversation on CNBC’s Squawk Box. Squawk Box is an American business news television program.

Alex Sherman joined the hosts, Joe Kernen and Andrew Ross Sorkin, to discuss ESPN's user-sourced content bet. Basically, ESPN has plans to add user-generated content features in its upcoming streaming application.

Think of it like DSTV adding a feature that allows you to also watch video sports uploads, just the same way you watch uploaded videos on YouTube.

It was amusing watching Joe Kernen (69 years old) gripe about it and how he could not see the value of such a service.

Andrew (48 years) was still a bit more understanding of the explanations that Alex (the younger of the 3) was offering.

Both of them could see that the service was trying to appeal to a much younger audience.

The bigger picture is that they were trying to understand a service that was not speaking their language.

When people don’t understand a language, they feel like they are on the outside.

This also happens at work.

Until you understand the language laced in the various workplace relationship dynamics, you will be outside.
