What You Do When No One Is Grading You
Howdy ,
Follow-Through is closing the gap. Word is meaning what you said. Standard is a different question: what quality of work do you produce when nobody is checking?
Think back to the FrontPage story from Tuesday.
Nobody told me how good the login system needed to be. Nobody asked for individualized reports…that was a promise my colleague made without me.
I could have built something that technically worked and left it there. Instead, I built something that held up under a demo he had not prepared me for.
That gap…between "good enough that no one complains" and "good enough that you are not afraid of scrutiny"…is where Standard lives.
And here is the uncomfortable part: most people only find out what their real Standard is when they are tested unexpectedly, the way I was.
So do not wait to be tested. Today, take one piece of work you are about to hand in…a report, a proposal, an email to a client…and before you send it, ask yourself: if the person receiving this decided to check every detail, would I be relaxed or afraid?
If you would be afraid, that is not a work problem. That is a Standard problem. Fix the piece of work first. Then ask yourself why you were willing to send it that way in the first place.
Keep winning at work and in life.
