The repair matters more than the relationship-building

Here's what nobody tells you about relationship capital: you will still get it wrong sometimes, even with people who trust you.

A message lands harder than you meant it to. Someone tells you so...directly, or through someone else.

Your instinct will be to explain your reasoning. Your reasoning might even be sound.

Resist that instinct first.

Listen before you explain. The repair isn't in proving you were right. It's in showing the other person that their reaction mattered enough for you to stop and actually hear it.

Relationship capital gets you in the room.

What you do in that room, after you've been challenged, is what keeps you there.
