The Skills That Work Everywhere (No Matter Who You're Working With)
Howdy ,
One thing I've learned from working across different countries and cultures is that coaching skills are universal.
While communication styles vary dramatically from place to place, the fundamentals of good coaching – listening, asking thoughtful questions, helping people think clearly – work everywhere.
The cultural bridge When you focus on understanding rather than being understood, when you ask questions instead of making assumptions, you naturally navigate cultural differences more effectively. Coaching skills help you become the person who brings different perspectives together rather than getting frustrated by them.
The generational connector Whether you're working with baby boomers who prefer formal communication or Gen Z colleagues who think in rapid iterations, coaching skills help you meet people where they are. You're not trying to change their style – you're helping them think within their own framework.
The complexity simplifier In today's workplace, we're constantly dealing with unclear priorities, changing requirements, and ambiguous situations. Coaching skills help you navigate this complexity by focusing on clarity: "What's most important here?" and "What do we need to figure out first?"
I was just part of a prep session for a strategic alignment session with some external parties. We had an external facilitator run the prep session. What was he doing? He was coaching us to get everything we said right and delivered what our audience needed.
And he worked through the framework I just shared with you. After the session, I thanked him for the good work he did facilitating the session.
These skills are transferable in different environments. As long as you master them and use them confidently.
Your practice for today: Use your coaching skills with someone whose working style is different from yours. Notice how the focus on understanding rather than convincing changes the interaction.
Friday, I'll wrap up with how to keep developing these skills without it feeling like another thing on your to-do list.
Keep winning at work and in life.
