Those 3 Skill Gaps (And What to do About Them)

Howdy ,

Yesterday we talked about the JPCA™ and those 5 crucial questions that determine whether you should stay in your job or start planning your exit.

By now, you've probably identified where your skills align with your job requirements... and where they don't.

Here's what I'm seeing with most professionals:

The gap isn't usually about technical skills. Most people can learn the software, master the processes, and figure out the "how-to" stuff.

The real gaps? They fall into three categories that I call The Skills Triad™:

Personal Skills - Things like adaptability, critical thinking, resilience, and that passion for learning that separates the good from the great.

Technical Skills - Your job proficiency, industry knowledge, and tool competence. (This is where most people think the problem is, but it's usually not.)

Transcendent Skills - The game-changers: leadership, strategic thinking, communication, problem-solving. These are what catapult you from "good employee" to "indispensable asset."

Here's the truth: Most career stagnation happens because people focus on the wrong skill gaps.

They think, "I need to learn Excel better" when what they really need is better strategic thinking. They believe they need another certification when what they need is improved communication skills.

Your action step for today: Look at your JPCA™ results and categorize your skill gaps into these three buckets. Then ask yourself:

  • Which gaps, if closed, would have the biggest impact on my career trajectory?
  • Am I focusing on the right skills, or just the easy-to-fix ones?

Tomorrow, I'll share the framework for building a skill development plan that actually moves the needle on your career.

Talk soon,

You can win at work and in life.
