What are they reading when you click send?
Howdy ,
Once upon a time, I got an email from a colleague in another country.
One of those "someone asked me to send this to you" emails. No ownership. No context.
Just a problem, forwarded…with the original sender nowhere in sight.
The email needed something from me to resolve a situation. But it gave me nothing to work with. No clarity on what had happened.
No indication of what they actually needed. Just words on a screen, arriving without a owner.
I could not respond. I did not know who I was really responding to.
That email did not just waste my time. It told me something about the person who sent it…and the person who asked them to.
Neither of them trusted themselves enough to own the conversation. So they passed it on and hoped for the best.
Here is what that kind of email actually costs: not five minutes of confusion. The quiet erosion of trust in the people whose names are attached to it.
Before you click send, ask yourself one question: if I received this email, would I know exactly what is being asked of me…and who owns it?
If the answer is no, pick up the phone first.
Keep winning at work and in life.
