A member of my team sent me that line about their own past work, after I told them their latest submission was a real improvement.

No defensiveness. No excuse-making. Just ownership, in their own words, laughing emoji attached.

That sentence took two years to earn.

Not because I was soft on them. Because I was present with them, long before I was ever demanding of them.

That's the order. Relationship, then accountability. Never the other way round. Never accountability alone.
