When My Mastermind Became Vacation Police
Howdy ,
I am part of a mastermind of 6 men. During our last meet-up, we decided to keep ourselves accountable for how we spent our next leave or vacation.
Why?
Because now and again, we would go on a holiday and still spend a lot of time doing office work.
Yes.
Instead of lying down on some deserted island, sipping a piña colada, we would be playing Crouching Tiger on our laptops, trying to get some more work in.
So, we are reporting on how we are spending our next holidays in the hopes that we will keep making progress.
Baby steps to success.
Why am I telling this story?
Because you might need this for yourself.
The Vacation Paradox
Here's the uncomfortable truth: Many high-achieving professionals have forgotten how to truly disconnect. We've become so addicted to productivity that even our rest time becomes another project to manage.
But here's what my mastermind brothers and I realized: If you can't disconnect from work during vacation, you're not actually taking a vacation. You're just working from a different location.
And that's not sustainable. It's not healthy. And it's definitely not helping you win at work and in life.
The Power of True Rest
Real vacation time isn't just about physical rest (though that's important). It's about:
• Mental restoration - Giving your brain space to process and reset
• Perspective reset - Stepping back far enough to see the bigger picture
• Relationship investment - Being fully present with the people who matter most
• Creative renewal - Allowing new ideas and solutions to emerge naturally
When you truly disconnect, you return to work sharper, more creative, and more energized than when you left.
Your Accountability Challenge
This week, I've shared insights about stress signals, sustainable success, weekend planning, and now vacation accountability. These aren't separate topics - they're all part of the same essential truth:
Your career should serve your life, not consume it.
So here's my challenge for you: The next time you plan time off - whether it's a weekend, a week, or just an afternoon - make a commitment to yourself about how you'll spend that time.
Will you check emails? Will you take work calls? Will you let your mind wander back to office problems?
Or will you commit to being fully present in your time off?
Find Your Accountability
You don't need a mastermind of 6 men (though I highly recommend building some form of support network). You just need someone who cares enough about your well-being to call you out when you're not honoring your own boundaries.
Maybe it's your spouse. Maybe it's a friend. Maybe it's your kids who deserve a parent who's actually present during family time.
Whoever it is, give them permission to hold you accountable for protecting your rest time as fiercely as you protect your work time.
The Bottom Line
Success isn't measured by how many hours you can work without breaking. It's measured by how effectively you can create the life you want while delivering exceptional results.
And that requires the wisdom to know when to work - and when to stop.
Your next vacation depends on it. Your long-term success depends on it. The people you love depend on it.
