Learn From a Boss Who Couldn't Stop Complaining

Howdy ,

Someone gave me a rant a while back.

A staff member of hers did something she did not like.

So she asked me, "Am I overblowing this?"

That's not the right question.

I am also careful not to make people's decisions for them.

Especially on matters that don't compromise on principles.

I told her, "Tell your staff how you want things to be while working with you."

It's not about what I think, it's about what type of work culture you want.

Later on, she thanked me for giving her that clarity.

Instead of just complaining about what the staff did, assuming that the staff knew what she should have done right, she told the staff in clear language what she wanted.

A simpler solution to making complaints.

And this also applies to not only people who report to us, but also to people above us.

Instead of complaining about how they are behaving towards us, we can find a smart way to let them know how we want things to be.

Is your boss giving you too much work with unreasonable deadlines?

Simply ask the next time he or she adds more to the list.

"Do you want me to drop the other tasks you gave me to focus on this, or can this wait till a better time?"

No more complaining.

Speak with Courage.

Ask what you really mean.

Remember, every workplace relationship improves when you replace complaints with clear requests. This is how you create the environment you want - by defining it, not just wishing for it.

You can win at work and in life.
