The Skill Development Plan That Actually Works

Howdy ,

We've covered the JPCA™ assessment and The Skills Triad™. Today, let's talk about what separates the professionals who actually bridge their skill gaps from those who just talk about it.

The difference? They follow what I call The 3-R Method:

Research - They don't just identify what they need to learn; they research the most effective way to learn it. Books? Courses? Mentorship? On-the-job training? The method matters as much as the skill.

Resource - They allocate real resources: time, money, and energy. They don't wait for their company to pay for their development. They invest in themselves first.

Rhythm - They create consistent, sustainable learning rhythms. Not weekend warrior cramming sessions, but daily 20-minute investments that compound over time.

Here's what this looks like in practice:

Let's say your JPCA™ revealed you need better strategic thinking skills (a Transcendent Skill).

  • Research: You discover that strategic thinking is best developed through case study analysis, scenario planning exercises, and mentorship from senior leaders.
  • Resource: You budget $100/month for learning, dedicate 30 minutes each morning to case study review, and reach out to three senior colleagues about informal mentoring conversations.
  •  Rhythm: Every Monday, you analyze one business case. Every Wednesday, you practice scenario planning on a current work challenge. Every Friday, you have a 15-minute learning conversation with someone more senior.

The result? In 90 days, you're thinking and communicating at a strategic level. Your managers notice. Opportunities start appearing.

But what if your JPCA™ revealed a fundamental mismatch?

Then your development plan looks different. You're researching target roles, building transition skills, and creating a timeline for your career pivot. The 3-R Method still applies - you're just applying it to career transition instead of skill enhancement.

Your final JPCA™ assignment:

  1. Choose your top 3 skill gaps (one from each Skills Triad category if possible)
  2. Apply the 3-R Method to each one
  3. Set a 90-day review date to reassess your progress

Remember: Your career isn't something that happens to you. It's something you actively create through intentional skill development and strategic decision-making.

The JPCA™ gives you the clarity. The Skills Triad™ gives you the framework. The 3-R Method gives you the execution plan.

Now it's time to build the career you actually want.

You can win at work and in life.
