Senior executives cannot afford careless words

Howdy ,

One of the fastest ways to weaken executive trust is to use words that weigh more than you intend to carry.

"I'll handle it."

"It will be done."

"Leave it with me."

"We are definitely doing this."

Each sounds small.

But every statement creates an expectation.

A trusted executive understands that words are not just communication.

They are commitments around which other people make decisions.

So the first Trust Test in the Trusted Executive Method is The Word:

Can people rely on what you say?

Is your language clear?

Is it truthful?

Is the certainty proportional to what you actually know?

Can people distinguish between a decision, an intention, a possibility and a promise when you speak?

Ambiguity from a junior employee may create inconvenience.

Ambiguity from a senior executive can redirect teams, budgets and months of work.

I think executives routinely underestimate how much trust is lost through imprecise language.

Perhaps you disagree.

Can someone be a highly trusted executive if people regularly have to clarify what they actually meant?

I'd be interested in your answer.

Keep winning at work and in life
