The Growth Note | Becoming Referable
Read it. Feel it. Do something with it.
────────────
Hey you,
Here’s the thing: most people don’t struggle to do great work — they struggle to get others to talk about their work clearly.
Think about referrals. You’ve probably heard someone try:
“Yeah, you should meet Kamryn. He’s… uh… a good speaker.”
That’s not referable. That’s forgettable.
Being referable is a communication skill. And like any skill, it can be practiced.
The 3 C’s of Being Referable: Clarity. Catchiness. Convenience.
1. Clarity — People know exactly what to say.
If someone wants to refer you, but can’t describe you in one sentence, the referral never happens.
Example for me:
“Kamryn works with general managers and trainers at luxury hotels and resorts to help their teams communicate so clearly that results finally match the vision.”
That’s clear. And clear is repeatable.
2. Catchiness — People remember the phrasing.
Generic descriptions get lost. Sticky phrases and stories travel.
Don’t just say: “I’m in leadership development.”
Say: “I help leaders stop sounding confusing and start sounding compelling.”
Catchy is memorable. And memorable gets repeated.
3. Convenience — People feel it’s easy to introduce you.
The harder the introduction feels, the less it happens. Give people a script:
“All you have to do is send a quick text introduction — I’ll take it from there.”
When it’s easy, it happens.
2 Quotes to Reflect On
“Make it easy to spread your story, and people will.” – Seth Godin
“Clarity is kindness. Unclear is unkind.” – Brené Brown
1 Stretch for the Week
Write your “referral sentence” in this format:
“My ideal referral is [person/company type] who feels they don’t know how to motivate their team to achieve the results they know are possible. I help them [outcome].”
Test it with a trusted friend or colleague. Ask them if it’s clear, catchy, and convenient enough to repeat.
Who in your lideserves to be referred more? Share this Growth Note with them — and help them become referable.
More soon — until then, speak boldly.
—Kamryn
