Why Most People Can’t Scale - And How to Fix It

Hey you,
Last week in Orlando, I had the chance to meet Dr. Benjamin Hardy in person at a large youth event for my church. , let's just say it was a dream come true!
If you’ve read any of his books, more specifically his newest boot: The Science of Scaling, you know Dr. Hardy has a way of making big concepts feel simple and simple concepts feel urgent.
One of those concepts has been echoing in my mind all week: Frame. Floor. Focus.
3 Ideas to Understand
1. Frame — What You See
Your frame is built from your future vision. It shapes how you see opportunities and challenges, what counts as signal and what becomes noise.
Without a clear frame, everything feels equally important… which means nothing is. (Remember in the Incredibles: "If everyone is super, no one is")
With a strong frame, you start noticing only what moves you toward your goals.
When I committed to this triathlon, my frame shifted. Suddenly, I noticed things I’d ignored before - like all of the specialized clothes I would need, bike mechanics, and open-water swim tips. The frame changed what I saw.
2. Floor — What You Filter Out
Your floor is the baseline you refuse to fall below - the things you won’t allow in your space because they dilute your focus.
In scaling a business, that means cutting processes, projects, or offers that don’t align.
In communication, it’s refusing to engage in conversations that don’t move the relationship forward or that erode trust.
For triathlon training, my floor is simple:
- No skipped training days without a real reason.
- No fueling with garbage... most of the time ;)
- No late nights before long rides or runs.
The higher your floor, the faster you grow because you’re not constantly cleaning up avoidable messes.
3. Focus — What You Filter For
Your focus is the small set of actions that matter most right now. It’s where your best energy goes.
When your frame is clear and your floor is strong, your focus sharpens naturally.
You know what to say yes to, and what to say no to, without guilt.
Right now, my focus is building endurance for the swim and run. In my work, my focus is writing a book that helps people communicate so clearly, others want to talk about them.
If this concept it tickling your brain in just the right way go read

“If you chase two rabbits, you will catch neither.” – Russian Proverb
“The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing.” – Stephen R. Covey
1 Stretch for the Week
If someone asked you your Frame, Floor, and Focus right now, could you answer in one sentence each?
Write them down. Then use them to guide your next conversation, meeting, or decision.
If this week’s Growth Note gave you clarity, forward it to one person who’s chasing too many things at once.
Sometimes the best gift you can give someone is focus.
More soon — until then, speak boldly.
