Word of the week: Galere – A coterie of undesirable people.

Happy Halloween! I want to take a moment to welcome our new subscribers. Our newsletter is a collection of news and stories from Horror Tree and around the web designed to help connect writers to useful resources. Though our name is Horror Tree, we do more than just horror, so no matter what you write, welcome! We’re glad that you’re here.

As a reminder, Trembling with Fear’s Halloween special is happening this Sunday. Make sure to check it out for some spooky reads to chill you to the core while you’re passing out candy to your friendly neighborhood goblins and ghouls. Also, make sure to dust off those jingle bells and deck your halls, because submissions for Trembling with Fear’s Christmas special are open until December 7th.

As always, you can find me (Holley) lurking on Twitter @HLCornetto. Here are the latest articles on writing from around the web.

Horror Tree Update:

You might be noticing that our newsletter looks a little different this week. We've switched platforms from Mail Chimp to SendFox. We're still playing around with it so you can expect some changes over the next few weeks.

We're still tinkering on the back end for now. Finding ways to make it just a bit faster for those of us who craft and schedule posts for the site. I do have a request for you though - Please share your feedback with your thoughts on our video refresh posts - https://www.patreon.com/posts/video-refreshes-57593581

Free Fiction Roundup:

I’m excited to share this week’s fiction picks. First up, we have “Hidden People” by Austin Shirley. I’m a huge fan of his, he’s been writing some great stuff, and this story involving a marriage strained by the loss of a child and a race of people many don’t believe in is no exception. Austin blends speculative and literary fiction seamlessly. The next selection is by Corey Farrenkopf. I admire this author’s use of language in the piece. Lines are well placed, and Farrenkopf knows how to choose just the right word or phrase. “Slowing Down” by Claire McNerney was dark and touching. This is a short piece, but it’s powerful. It’s frightening, sad, and hopeful. The last piece of fiction is from Jared Povanda, an author I discovered earlier this year with an excellent piece in Wrongdoing Magazine’s first issue. “Yes, Huntington” is captivating and disturbing. I hope you enjoy this week’s fiction as much as I did.

Now, on to the fiction:

Hidden People” by Austin Shirley. The Saturday Evening Post.

Something Aquatic. Something Hungry” by Corey Farrenkopf. Necessary Fiction.

Slowing Down” by Claire McNerney. Wyld Flash.

Yes, Huntington” by Jared Povanda. Ellipsis Zine.

🗒️ “Writing for Themed Anthologies,” with Keith DeCandido, Randee Daw, and Michael A. Ventrella

image

REVIEW: “Writing for Themed Anthologies,” with Keith DeCandido, Randee Dawn, and Michael A.

Ventrella A long time ago, an editor (who has since passed away), gave me a compliment–I wasn’t as much of a noob as a lot of writers who had only published a few things.

That is, I tended to make less of an ass of myself than other writers who were relatively new at the game… Okay, that sounds rude, and I don’t mean it to be, but before I started trying to send out stories for rejection, I mean consideration, I did a lot of reading and searching Internet groups and articles aimed at writers.

I made mistakes of course, as most writers do, but I never had to ask the question “Where do I start?

” If you’re asking that question, “Writing for Themed Anthologies” might hold a few answers for you.

The video first aired as a live stream on September 2, 2020....
