A Sunset … With No Photo

Last night, I was driving, and there was a stunning sunset. One of those that lifts my spirits and leaves me in awe.

And I didn’t get a picture.

Like I said, I was driving. And I could only catch glimpses of its true beauty as it peeked past buildings and trees.

It’s odd; in these days where I have a phone (with a camera) in my hand so much of the time, I can feel like something isn’t real unless I have a photo of it. That’s even a phrase I’ve jokingly said: “Pics, or it didn’t happen!”

But when I was growing up, I didn’t have a camera available all the time. I just had to look at a sunset and enjoy it. So last night, that’s what I tried to do. (While I also tried to drive safely—a sky like that is quite a distraction!)

And you know what? That sunset was real and amazing, even without any pictures. My phone camera wouldn’t have done it justice anyway!

Maybe I can learn to enjoy more things without future proof that they happened. Memory can be more powerful than a photo, especially when it means I was enjoying the real thing, not an image of it on my phone screen as I took pictures!
