Vision and Developmental Optometery. What's your question?

Dear ,
I love interviewing experts in the field of neuromotor development and I've learned a ton over the years. But there's one kind of expert that is unmatched in what they can teach us. They have something that nobody wants, yet having it is what gives them such profound insight. It gives their expertise a kind of unmatched brilliance.
That expert is the expert who also just happens to be the patient.
Having the lived experience, juxtaposed with their professional knowledge takes their understanding to a whole new level that allows the rest of us a glimpse into the truth of what we think we know
- and what we don't know
- and what we need to know!
So when Dr Susan Barry agreed to an interview I was over the moon excited!
If you haven't heard of 'Stereo Sue', you are missing out! Her personal story of discovering stereopsis late in life is a fascinating story of vision and brain recovery. It's a peek into whatβs possible if we keep striving to figure out how to tap into the brains capacity for neuroplasticity.
In her book, 'Fixing My Gaze: A Scientists Journey Into Seeing in Three Dimensions', Dr Barry beautifully illustrates how growing up with (an arguably) minor visual impairment impacts on seemingly every bit of child development and adult participation, from physical skills, to learning, to self-esteem.
As a Professor Emeritus of Biological Sciences, Professor Emeritus of Neuroscience and Behavior and (as she calls herself) a recovered Strabismic, Dr Barry is the perfect person to ask your questions about
π€ Developmental Optometry,
π€ The impact of vision on balance and everything else
π€ The impact of balance and everything else on vision
π€ How vision and perception shape our understanding and our behaviour
π€ How Science is so important in understanding rehabilitation
π€ How the 'Evidence" we get from science and academia can be so wrong
or any other niggling question you've got related to vision, developmental optometry, perception, evidence based practice, neuroplasticity and rehabilitation.
Send me your questions and I'll weave them into our conversation.
But be quick - this interview is happening next week!
