What's spasticity got to do with coaching?

Hey ,
Action Items:
1 - Get your pod sorted.
2 - Get on Qwil
3 - Get ready to have an awesome September!
It's September and we are about to get into all things coaching and specifically Occupational Performance Coaching with Dr Fi Graham and I'm so thrilled to be digging into this topic a little more.
When I did my training with Fi, we did a lot of role playing, which can feel really weird, but it's a powerful way to develop your coaching skills. I think it's a lot like spasticity actually - weird analogy, but stick with me...
My favorite quote from the amazing late Dr Karen Pape was
'Habits Hide Recovery'
When we ask our kids to do what they have already practiced doing, they use their existing neural pathways aka their spastic pathways. To uncover their real potential, you have to practice unpracticed tasks - walking in the pool with a flotation vest, walking backwards, or as per the name of her book - running instead of walking. These unpracticed tasks allow them to tap into new neural pathways instead of getting stuck in their old habits.
That's exactly where we are at as professionals. We are VERY practiced at talking to parents and kids.
And coaching is a talking activity.
So as soon as we start talking - boom - we're into our practiced pathways - and it can be really challenging to do things differently when we are already in the groove - it's just like spasticity. We think we're doing it right, because it feels right - but from an outsider perspective it may look a little funky - or clunky - or less than effective.
So to get outside of our habits - we have to practice in environments that we don't usually practice in - and that's where the role-play comes in.
Awkward?
Yup - at least to start with.
Effective?
Yes! It's surprisingly effective!
Fun?
💯%
