CPGs and Plumb Lines - Spotlight 6 [TWC]

Jul 15, 2025 1:52 am

Hey ,

Last week, we got tactical with muscle contraction, amplitude, and why your clinical reasoning—not just your tools—makes the magic happen. This week, we’re taking a deep dive into the engine room of movement: central pattern generators (CPGs), the art of clinical analysis, and what true clinical innovation really looks like in practice.

🔑 Spotlight 6 – Deep Dive: CPGs, Clinical Analysis & Innovation

1. CPGs: The Rhythm Makers Behind Gait

CPGs are the spinal cord’s built-in circuits for rhythmic movement—think walking, stepping, and reciprocal motion. With the right cues and supports (like body-weight-supported treadmill training), you can “wake up” these innate patterns. I've dropped some fascinating research on split-belt treadmill training to get your brain fired up about the interplay of CPG's (feedforward - motor) and reciprocal reflexes (feedback - sensory)

2. Clinical Analysis: See In Lines

Susan’s top advice this week? Use photos and plumb lines to objectively assess alignment. When children have not integrated postural control, even a few degrees off can throw off a child’s sense of where they are in space. Take side and front photos, draw those vertical lines, and train your eye to spot what’s really happening—not just what you think you see.

3. Clinical Innovation: Curiosity with Guardrails

Innovation isn’t guesswork. Start with evidence, test new ideas on yourself, and observe closely when introducing anything new to kids. True innovation is a blend of curiosity, humility, and responsibility.

4. Center of Mass & Everyday Alignment

You know this, but it's worth saying more than once - look at how kids sit, move, and play at home—because real change sticks when alignment is supported everywhere.

This brings us to the end of the snippets - I hope you've learned something that's got you excited about what's possible when we get back to basics with our feet on the ground (literally) and the stretch for the gold that makes the impossible possible.

With that in mind - we've got sooooo much exciting stuff coming up:

  • The Wise Table (ooh this is going to be a great discussion)
  • Book Club (clear some space for getting nerdy)
  • Laser Coaching (which kids could do with Susan's eyes on them)
  • A Spinal Neuromodulation Deep Dive (it's going to be epic!)

Too much to add to this email and I don't want to detract from the fascinating content of the snippets from this spotlight - there's loads of good stuff to sink your teeth into!

With oodles of enthusiasm,

Mindy
