Powerful emotional triggers in communication you can easily use

Hey ,

We are well on our way to diving deep into OPC - Spotlight 2 dropped this week and if you haven't yet seen it, we cover

  • Power dynamics
  • Goal setting in therapy
  • Communication skill strategies

My take-away from this spotlight was the power of using someones own words back to give them a sense that you 'get them'.

Having Fi talk about paraphrasing vs using someone's own words was one of those memory jolts - you know when you've had a strong emotion about something and you go straight back with a familiar smell, or a song? I

t was one of those moments for me.

It would have been more than 5 years ago and I vividly remember sitting in the classroom trying to articulate why I was so frustrated with my younger son. I honestly can't remember WHAT was frustrating me at the time (now he's grown up and about to graduate as an engineer it's all rainbows 🌈😉),

but I so remember being heard!

It was powerful!

So my action point for you this week - is have a listen, and then have a go and practicing this communication skill. Just pick one or two words someone else is saying (with a bit of emotion) and say it back to them - like not in a weird way - but in a way that reflects it back to them in the context of the conversation.

Have a listen to Fi and I talking about this here

Spotlights 2

and whilst you're there check out the video on SMART goals I added - it's possibly one of my favorite videos of all time!

Have an awesome rest of your week!

Mindy
