Laser coaching, book club, and a podcast surprise

Sep 30, 2025 7:08 pm

Hey ,

It's October 1st in New Zealand (holy smokes! ) and it's looking like a good month for hanging out with your Wired Collective colleagues! We've got something old, something new, something nerdy and something... (hmmm... blue?)

Anyhoo

Enough with the bad rhyming - here's what's happening this October - and this week.

Something old: Laser coaching. This is where we take all the theory and make it make sense. Can't wait to share some real clinical problem solving cases with Susan coming up later this month.

Something new: I'm uber excited about this! You're invited to come join me for a WiredOn Podcast interview. Instead of sending in your questions, join me live with my guest next week and ask your questions in real time.

"Whose the guest?" I hear you ask.

More on that tomorrow - because today I want to talk most about

something nerdy: BOOK CLUB 📖

The Crown Jewel of the Brain: Chapter 5 Awaits Us Neuro Nerds! 🧠

Before we ascend to the cortical penthouse, let's trace our neurological journey...

Where We've Been:

Chapter 1 - the motor infrastructure - evolutionarily conserved movement "building blocks" that combine to create all complex skills. We explored how motor primitives work like LEGO pieces to construct everything from walking to piano playing.

Chapter 2 - the network mechanics - central pattern generators (CPGs) in the spinal cord that create automatic rhythms and coordination. We discovered how sensory feedback fine-tunes these built-in motor programs through synaptic plasticity.

Chapter 3 - the spatial command center - the tectum/superior colliculus that maps your surroundings and triggers orienting movements. We unpacked how vision, attention, and movement decisions integrate to navigate space and respond to threats.

Chapter 4 - the basal ganglia - the "gate-keepers" that decide which movements get the green light and how habits form. We explored dopamine, motivation, and motor learning.

Plus of course the TSN Summit! Looking at how we can tap into these powerful inborn programs.

What's Coming: Chapter 5 - The Motor Cortex

This is it - the CEO of movement, the master conductor, the place where intention meets action with precision. Chapter 5 gets into fine motor control, developmental aspects of neurological processing times, planning vs execution and MORE sensory-motor integration and vision. Connect the dots between cortical organization and complex movement challenges you see daily. This chapter arms you with the "why" behind what you are already observing in clinic - the neural wisdom to guide your interventions.

PS. We'll also be wrapping up with Susan Hasting for a final Q&A at the end of October so now is a good time to browse ALL the past goodness with your curious hat on and start asking yourself the good questions that get your brain buzzing.
