The seating footprint 101 [CEO]
Oct 24, 2024 7:25 pm
Hey ,
I'm so excited to bring you this FIRST CEO session with Sharon Sutherland!
Talk about jam packed learning!! If you've got kids in wheelchairs, this is a session to watch.
Sharon and Rex work through a complex wheelchair seating session for a 17 year old with spastic dystonia (GMFCS V).
Here's a few clinical pearls from the session:
- "Seating is not therapy" - focus on finding comfortable, tension-free angles for seating that support function.
- Hand placement behind PSIS during hip flexion assessment is crucial
- Stop hip flexion the moment pelvis starts to rotate posteriorly
- Consider pelvic rotation when addressing windswept deformity
- Consider the snowball effect of improper positioning on overall posture
Topics Covered
04:55 Assessment Techniques and Observations
09:21 Understanding Pelvic Positioning

+ much, much more...
Things to Remember
- Measure abduction/adduction of leg at desired hip flexion and knee extension angle.
- Get the shoulder, life box and ASIS correct first and check whether pelvic obliquities are reducible or not based on movement of the shoulder and upper body.
- Greater trochanter are also greater loading surfaces. IT shelfs don't block sliding, it's to immerse them.
Sit down and be inspired!
Warm regards,
Mindy
