The “Intentional Coaching” Strategy

JT Ayers discusses a coaching strategy he calls “intentional coaching,” focusing on developing athletes through dynamic, instinctual training.

He shares a memorable example of a freshman, Jackson McCuster, who idolizes senior Carson Kaminsky. Ayers sets up a training scenario where Jackson is being “chased” by Carson in a flying 100-meter race, pushing Jackson to run purely on instinct, without overthinking.

The challenge becomes about survival—Jackson has to outrun Carson or risk being “caught,” which motivates him to perform at his best..

The strategy is rooted in the idea that racing and competing are learned behaviors, and the act of chasing others helps athletes improve their drive and performance.

Ayers fosters a competitive environment where athletes constantly push each other to be faster, more instinctive, and more prepared for race-day challenges.

JT Ayers discusses the importance of having a clear, intentional plan for athletes. Emphasizing the idea of setting goals and measuring progress, using key performance indicators (KPIs) like times and splits, and creating a feedback loop where athletes hold themselves accountable for their performance.

Ayers explains that by allowing athletes to take ownership of their own progress, they develop a deeper understanding of their strengths and areas for growth.

He also discusses the use of shared terminology among his coaching staff, ensuring consistency across training and competition.

Phrases like "bouncy," "push," "recover," and "up tall" are used to help athletes refine their technique, particularly in high-intensity events like the 200m and 400m sprints.

The video highlights Ayers' approach to fostering a culture of self-improvement and accountability, where athletes are actively involved in their own development and are equipped with the tools to continuously get better.
