3 Jump Drills to improve multiple phases of the Jump

Coach ,

Coach Justin Kinseth at a recent event shared some triple jump drills that helped develop the complete jumper in his program at the University of Wisconsin - Oshkosh. At the Division III level oftentimes you are still working with multi-sport athletes and low recruits out of high school.

Coach Kinseth embraces the idea of development in the athlete and the jumping events. The drills he shares will focus on long jump penultimate, entry, and takeoff

Penultimate Drill

Walking into the penultimate step allows the athlete to hit a flat-flat contact and sets them up for proper entry in the pit. Without a proper set up the athlete is unable to achieve the positions that follow. This simple drill is really important for take off and entry.

Entry Drill

The standing entry drill helps the athlete achieve a proper sequence as they enter the pit. Coach Kinseth teaches his athletes to get big, drive knees up, and get into a leg shoot. A common error amongst jumpers is extending their legs prior to the knee drive.

Takeoff Drill

Flat foot contact is an emphasis for all jumpers in his 2-step and 3-step approach drills. These drills allow the athlete to feel a penultimate position. Blocking on the take-off leg is another crucial element to achieving a proper take-off.

The reason why these drills make sense is that they are simple and allow the jumper to individually improve multiple phases of their jump.

Keep it simple and always be growing,
