Revolutions in Speed Training

Coach,
Last year I was able to attend the Revolutions in Speed Training at the University of Minnesota. It was one of the most informative events I’d ever attended on speed. Chris Korfist, Cal Dietz, and Dan Fichter each contributed both in person and through an online course with a wealth of knowledge and information. I’ve been to a number of speed clinics in the past but this one was different.
All three coaches took a deep dive into what it is that makes athletes fast and then specifically how we can train it through exercise. Chris Korfist has been on the forefront of sprint training and research for decades.
I’ve been following Chris for years. He always takes the research of coaches like Peter Weyand and Ken Clark and then immediately applies his own methods to create transferable exercise and training programs. The information I’m about to share with you comes from the clinic itself and each clip is long enough to be its own course.

Cal Dietz ability to solve problems or create solutions through weight room exercise has always been impressive. The clinic was full of exercise demonstrations and practical applications on how to make people faster. We watched as Cal’s son violently attacked a workout based on speed and power development. One of the most recent additions to his speed development programs are what he refers to as the “Yuri”.

Change of direction is sometimes separated from speed clinic talks. Cal has developed and showed us the newest most transferable change of direction positional exercise I’ve ever seen. It combines a position-specific drill and an overcoming isometric in very specific joint positions. In this next clip he explains the key coaching points and compares the exercise to a video of an actual live change of direction.

One of the other most useful training concepts I was able to take home was the use of Triphasic triple stack. The most sport-specific hip extension and squatting exercises than any other means. What started in 2005 as a program for jumpers and track athletes has developed into an entire philosophy applied to exercises within his program. The triple stack incorporates 4 key elements.
1. Big Toe Driving Into Ground
2. Heel Elevated
3. Hips Over Heels
4. Knee in Front of Toe

The Revolutions in Speed Training Clinic left me with more than just a notebook full of notes. I was able to immediately implement many of the concepts and pick the brains of some of the best coaches on the planet. Take your time as you delve into these lessons.
I’m so thankful the information was captured and organized in such a way that was easy to follow that I can always refer back to.
Always be growing,
