Coach ,

No one has ever jumped further than Mike Powell. In fact his world record long jump of 8.95 meters (29-04.5) was set all the way back in 1991 at Tokyo’s National Stadium. What made him such a phenomenal jumper? Take a look and decide for yourself.

The long jump can be simplified into four different parts, the approach, the take-off, the flight, and the landing. When I watch that world record I can’t help but be mesmerized by the take-off mechanics and speed at which Mike Powell transfers the energy from his approach into flight.

So what was the drill that took Mike to world record jumping performances? The Push, Pull, Plant Drill. Check it out.

The takeoff is crucial to maintaining the speed off the board. The plant is about quickly blocking your leavers and learning to use the body effectively to transfer forces into flight. Use this four-part drill to teach yourself how to take off better than ever before.

Whether you’re coaching beginning jumper or pushing to break Mike Powell’s world record. Be sure to add these two drills to your training inventory and watch your jump performances soar to new heights.

Always be growing,
