Coach ,
One of the biggest challenges on a track and field staff is managing and coaching multiple throwing events. Shot put, Discus, and Javelin each present unique challenges. Depending on your set up the event practice areas may not even be near each other.
Organization and management of practice groups and routines are extremely important.
One way to maximize throw practice time and efficiency is find the similarities in the events and train them. Balance, rhythm, explosive power, and technique are imperative pieces of each throwing event.
Here I discuss the importance of a dynamic warm-up that prepares all athletes for the similar demands of their events below.
Another way to maximize practice time is to group athletes using a station approach and enable leadership within your upperclassmen. Coach Jim Aikens explains more here.
Another way to increase efficiency is to set up an in-season approach to specific preparation for the throwing events. Suzy Powell, former American record holder discusses the common themes for each throwing event training program.
These simple strategies of combining groups in the warm-up, in practice, and in the weight room are sure to enhance your practice time and maximize your ability to service all athletes in your throws program. Good luck next season and may each one of your athletes throw a ton of PR’s!
