I see this a lot.
A fashion designer who’s hardworking, skilled, and delivers amazing pieces…
But she keeps saying:
“I don’t know how to find customers who can actually pay well.”
And honestly, that’s her biggest challenge—not lack of skill, but lack of selling skill.
She’s constantly upgrading her fashion skills. But has she upgraded her marketing and sales skills?
That’s where the real transformation happens.
Now, let me give her (or you, if this sounds like you) a few practical steps to begin changing that:
.
✅ 1. Define Your Profit Per Outfit
Sit down and decide:
How much profit do I want from a dress?
From an embroidered dress? A kaftan? Etc.
For example:
If it costs N15k to sew a dress and you want to make N10k profit, that’s N25k.
Then add a small negotiation buffer—say N4k. That makes your happy price: N29k.
So when a customer asks “how much?”, you’re no longer guessing.
You’re confidently giving your happy price—one that ensures you don’t run at a loss.
Pro tip:
Practise saying your price in front of a mirror until it feels natural.
.
✅ 2. Identify Who Can Pay That Price
Your price isn’t the problem.
You’re just selling to the wrong people.
Make a list of 5 to 10 people around you who can pay your happy price—even if they’re not your customers.
This helps you build a picture of your ideal customer.
Someone who values your work and has the money to pay for it.
.
✅ 3. Connect Through Your Network
Here’s the truth: Your ideal customer knows someone you already know.
Your friend, church member, classmate, or neighbour likely knows someone who fits your target.
So what should you do?
Ask.
Ask them to recommend you.
Ask for introductions.
Ask for referrals.
You’re one conversation away from a paying client.
And you don’t need to limit yourself to your city. You can be connected to customers abroad too.
💡 This is called referral marketing – it’s organic, it’s free, and it works.
And it’s just one part of a solid marketing plan.
Here are more ways she can level up her visibility:
🔹 Lead Generation – Building a contact list of people who look like potential customers
🔹 Reach-Out – Introducing your brand directly to them
🔹 Sales Promotions – Running timely campaigns to drive sales
🔹 Sponsored Ads – Reaching a wider audience with targeted ads
🔹 Follow-Up – Keeping conversations going with people who’ve shown interest
The best part?
She can do ALL of this from her phone.
🎯 Final Thought:
Waiting for customers to find you is a recipe for financial struggle.
Going out to find and connect with them is how real business growth happens.
