What’s that shifting all about?

👋
Dear all,
So it turns out I decided to shift careers into an area that has been massively under pressure and therefore under exaggerated attention from the media: tech!
I will start a Full Stack Web Development bootcamp in two weeks and am aiming to get a job as a junior developer within the next 6 months. But then you read the news and you see that THE tech companies conducted huge layoffs:
“Alphabet, Microsoft, and Amazon—all announced job cuts that affected 40,000 employees combined. That brings total layoffs in the tech industry to more than 200,000 over the last year, according to the FT” (source: Morning Brew)
What a number!
But it just serves to highlight Big Tech's stunning hiring boom during the pandemic. Believe it or not, the majority of Big Tech workforces have increased significantly since Covid's launch. Let's look at the statistics:
- Between June 2021 and June 2022, Microsoft hired 40,000 workers. After the recent layoffs, the number of employees has increased by 30,000 in the past 18 months.
- Alphabet laid off 12,000 employees, which is almost 33% of the 36,751 employees company employed in the one year leading up to September 2022.
- In 2020 and 2021, Meta (Facebook) hired almost 26,000 people, yet it also just laid off 11,000 people.
I did worry for a minute when I read these news, but then again, as I always like to say, zooming out and putting things into perspective is always best. I am pretty sure web development will continue to be a skill with a very high demand for years to come.
And all this “worry” made me create my first meme 😅!
Here is to zooming out and putting things into perspective 🥂!
Take care!
Your André
