Hey
I bet you have heard this before "white rice is bad".
I have even heard some health coaches say that if you removed rice from your diet you will lose weight "instanta".
Hmmm. I don't know about "instanta" because weight loss doesn't exist in a vacuum, the idea that only one habit will create a total body transformation isn't one I endorse entirely and science also suggests that a holistic approach to weight loss is better.
Let's get back to white rice!!!
Yes it's highly processed and has little nutritional value but it's probably not the only cause of weight gain. But I agree you should eat it sparingly because honestly the nutritional value isn't worth the weight gain that can happen when consumed regularly.
I read an article recently (science backed) and I found these two reasons particularly interesting.
1) White rice is highly processed and missing its hull (the hard protective coating), bran (outer layer) and germ (nutrient-rich core) for this reason white rice lacks many vitamins and minerals so it is considered empty carbs since it has been stripped of its main sources of nutrients.
2)White rice has a glycemic index of 64 (quite high) so as a result, carbs in white rice are turned into blood sugar rapidly and this may be one reasons why white rice has been associated with a higher risk of type 2 diabetes
Although, white rice is not all bad it is highly recommended to eat sparingly as opposed to an everyday choice. As a Nigerian I know how this all sounds (sorry sha) but believe me, there's an abundance of healthier carbohydrates in Nigeria and with little planning you can eat your way to better health. Maybe in my next email I will share these healthier carbs options.
