Selecting the movies for 3rd quarter

Oct 14, 2022 2:58 pm

Good Friday evening!

I hope you have nice plans and hopes for this weekend, and that they come true.

For me, a weekend is a time to watch a movie.

If you don't know what to watch, maybe my suggestions will interest you.

In our free Facebook group and on Instagram, I asked a question about how to select movies for the Movie Discussion Club: by genre, actor, theme, or randomly.

I got an almost unanimous answer - "random".

This way, I guess, there's less chance that you end up with several movies in a row that you're not interested in.

So, this time I combed through my list of interesting and thought-provoking movies, and I picked the three that are different from each other.

Here is the selection for the last quarter of 2022:

  • Mona Lisa Smile
  • Argo
  • Enola Holmes

1) "Mona Lisa Smile" (2003) is a drama about a free-thinking art professor who teaches girls in a conservative 1950s college to question their traditional social roles.

You might like it if you liked "Dead Poets Society" and "Hidden Figures".

2) "Argo" (2012) is a thriller/drama about a CIA agent rescuing 6 Americans in Teheran during the US hostage crisis in Iran in 1979 when he pretended to be a Hollywood producer planning a science fiction film. This "edge of the chair" thriller is even more interesting when you know it's based on a true story.

If you liked the intensity of "Togo", you will like this one (but without a 🐕).

3) "Enola Holmes" (2020) is an adventure/crime/action film about a teen sister of the famous detective who sets off to find her mother who'd gone missing and unravels a plot to kill a young lord.

I don't think we've seen any movies like this one yet, but I hope you'll enjoy it.

Have you seen any of these 3 movies?

Let me know what you think about them.

If you'd like to understand the movies better and discuss them together, join our movie discussion community.

For each movie, I create a movie workbook with characters, selected vocabulary, quotes, discussion questions, and other resources about the movie + I organize interesting monthly discussions.

I'd be happy to welcome you in the community.

Have a wonderful weekend and a good rest,

Tania.
