do you want knowledge or skills?

Can you learn to drive by watching instructional videos?
Can you learn to box by observing Klitchko's or Usyk's fights?
Can you learn to cook by watching cooking TV shows?
You can't.
Yes, you'll learn a lot.
But watching is not the same as learning.
That's why simply watching movies and TV shows will not improve your English.
Watching is just expanding your knowledge.
But your skills are just the same, not better.
So what do you need to do in order to box, drive or cook better?
Take action. Activate your skills.
Only actions will help you get skills (instead of knowledge).
Yes, you have to try to use the information you learned - in practice.
Practice means doing something with the movie you've watched. Before, during, or after.
It might take several attempts to get good results, but as long as you practice (not simply watch), you'll get them.
If you want to know how to practice your English with movies, you can try my Movie Workbook - it has the tasks designed to improve your skills.
Or if you'd like to design your own routine, you can attend a free live event my colleague Cara Leopold is organizing on Friday.
She'll be sharing her strategies to help you improve your English with movies, specifically romantic comedies. You can join her here (but hurry up!): How to Understand & Speak Authentic English with Romantic Comedies.
If you need changes, you need to start making the change.
Keep shining,
Tania.
